Frequently Asked Questions

Below are some of our more frequently asked questions concerning White Dove Release Ceremonies.

Where do the doves go when released?

The doves have been trained to return to their home loft. People often ask if all doves will fly home. NO. Only those that have been properly bred with the "homing" instinct and correctly trained.

How do they know where "home" is?

Nobody really knows. But a well-trained dove can navigate 100's of miles to find the way home.

How long does it take for the doves to get home?

The doves travel between 50-60 miles per hour and usually fly non stop until they reach their home.

Will they make a mess at the ceremony?

The birds have a special diet before big events so they can perform at top levels without "messing up".

When will the birds be released?

This is entirely up to you! There can be a lot of creativity in the timing and location of your release. We will discuss that with you during the planning of the event. We never release birds close to sunset or after dark. They must have time to fly home before dark.

What if it rains on the day of our ceremony?

For 'Acts of God' such as rain, snow, high winds or other adverse situations, we reserve the right to cancel the dove release. We will not jeopardize the health and well being of our beloved doves. In this event all deposits are fully refundable. Display Packages are not cancelled because of weather.

Can the doves be bought from a pet store and be released?

No, doves bought in pet stores do not have the homing ability; and therefore, it would be inhumane to release these types of doves in the wild. They would quickly fall prey to other animals.

Can the doves be shipped for self-release?

No, due to the training that is involved with our doves, only a professional trainer should release the doves.

Can the doves be released indoors?

No, they are only trained to be released outdoors. However, they always make a beautiful display for indoors.

Can the doves be released at dark?

No, the doves have to be released by one hour prior to sunset to enable them to return home to their loft before dark.

Can the doves be released from your hands?

Yes, although certain care must be taken when handling our doves. One of our trained handlers will work with you prior to the release to ensure everything goes smoothly.

How can doves be released at a church wedding?

Following the ceremony or as the couple leaves the reception, the doves can be released outside. This could take the place of throwing rice or other common rituals.
